Ruffwear

Ruffwear Logo
Ruff Wear. In the summer of 1992, while mountain biking in the Los Padres National Forest with friends and their dog, Ruff Wear founder and president Patrick Kruse met with a challenge that sparked a series of innovations in gear for dogs on the go.

While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn't set it down without losing the water and she didn't want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. "You need to do something about this," Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.

Patrick Kruse was the right person to ask. As a kid he constructed packs for his dog out of army surplus gas mask bags, using them on backpack trips in Northern California's Trinity Alps. As a young adult, he sailed for several years as crew on charter boats in the Caribbean and Central America where being resourceful was a necessity. Patrick's interest in kayaking lead him to start Salamander Paddle Gear acquainting him with numerous technical fabrics. With this unique mix of knowledge and experience Patrick developed The Quencher™, the original collapsible food and water bowl for dogs—and the solution to Liz and Moqui's drinking problem.

In 1994, after 16 months of research and development and product testing, Ruff Wear made its enthusiastically welcomed debut at an Outdoor Retailer trade show with The Quencher™. Since, it has won praise from thirsty dogs and been in a range of publications. "They were impressed with the simplicity, quality and function of The Quencher™ and wanted to see what other solutions we could come up with," Patrick says.

Ruff Wear now offers a full line of innovative performance dog gear. In addition to collapsible bowls, the company produces a full line of dog-related equipment designed to enhance the interaction between humans and dogs. A brief listing of gear includes dog packs, dog boots, dog harnesses, dog coats, and dog life jackets.

"We want to enhance the experience of all dogs and their two legged companions," Patrick says. Besides those who are active with their pets, trainers, working dogs, Search and Rescue teams, Canine Companions and Guide Dog Users all have become Ruff Wear supporters and each present specific challenges in product development. "My needs pale in comparison to those who depend on their dogs for assistance," he says. "The specific tasks and companionship dogs provide is really incredible. It puts a smile on my face when people appreciate the simple design approach that we build into our gear to address complex tasks."

"We’ve always been oriented toward products that will enhance and assist the interaction between dogs and humans. And that has always been and will continue to be our motivation."

Nicely designed dog backpack. I can't attest as to the comfort from th dog's perspective, but it has plenty of adjustments and rides close to his back, so I"ll give it a 4. Pockets are well sized. Glad I bought it.

My Australian Shepherd accepted these very well although he wasn't a big fan of the neoprene cover. They worked well for his front feet and didn't fall off in icy snow on our forest trails. You do have to make sure the velcro is secured well as it isn't stretchy and harder to get tight.

The sizing is odd this harness is very long between the front legs. The idea of an ID pouch is cute, But unless someone knows that it’s there they’re not going to find it. I do like the new colors but I’ll stick with my true love harness.

We have a Bernedoodle with curly hair. This collar was to help her pulling and slipping out of it. The chain from where it tightens has rubbed or pulled all her hair out of the side where the chain glass during walks - she has a bald spot all around the side of her neck. It’s a good collar but bit great for pups with different hair that will rub off.

Max wears a lot of ruffwear and small tends to work for him. His chest is about 25 inches. I bought this in a small as well. At first I felt it was too small but I think it’s ultimately fine. The straps are skinny and don’t seem to get bigger if you go up a size just longer so I think a small will work. I had hoped to put a roll of poop bags in the pocket but found that a new roll bulges too much making it not fit flush so I’ll probably just throw an emergency bag or two in the pocket instead of the roll. It’s been hot here in California and it’s only February so the light weight harness seemed needed for our walks. The front range he usually wears is a little warm for the heat.

Material is great, but fit doesn’t work for my dog. He falls in between XS and S. 21 pounds, 15 inches collar to tail, 20 inch chest, and 14 inch neck. XS is short on him and pretty tight, Small could work for length although pretty big, but chest is too loose.

It looks great, and feels like it's sturdy. My dog was going through collars like it was nobody's business and she hasn't been able to destroy this one yet. The loop for the leash is very solid too, I doubt she can break that. Overall, would buy again.

Ok these are dog boots so do I really know about the comfort .. not exactly but the grip is great and the fit is better than other models. I have 12 yr old large breed with mobility issues so these are mainly for walking outside on the sidewalk and preventing a lot of foot damage when she knuckles under and drags her back feet. Pro Tip for foot draggers ... use Shoe Goo and keep building back where they are wearing thin, I can get 6-8 months with these Ruffwear boots and Shoe Goo combined.

This is a very light harness, and it fits my Min Pin well. I have since purchased two more for my other two Min Pins because this one was so easy to put on, and I felt like it wasn’t bulky. Also, dries really fast after a beach walk or washing. Doesn’t seem to hold onto hair they way some other harnesses do (like in all the little crevices).

The Ruffwear Hydro Plane disc dog toy is highly durable and floats. I recommend the Large size for all but the smallest dog breeds. Large is about the size of a dinner plate. It's a little pricey, but will hold up over time. Our dog has gotten several years of heavy play out of it - it's a little scruffy looking but still very functional. We just ordered a 2nd one for "grandma's" house.
