In HER Soles: Hanging In Deep Ellum With CNK's Editor-In-Chief

For me, Dallas and sneakers just go together. After moving here from my hometown of Minneapolis about twelve years ago, I found a home away from home that combined equal parts culture and southern charm. That duality of the big city life mixed with slow-paced culture also carries over into my role as Founder/Editor at, a website dedicated to serving women in the sneaker and streetwear space. Three years in the making, our goal is to educate and empower every woman from the novice collector to the woman who has a special room dedicated to her sneakers. Most importantly, I love that we’ve created a platform where we can introduce brands we love, women we admire, and show girls just how versatile kicks can be.

In the dozen years that I’ve resided here, I can honestly say that my sneakers have pounded much pavement in Dallas but, no place is as alive and representative of the easy weave between the new (think hip-hop, strong drinks, and bomb sushi) and the old (think honkey tonks, IPAs, and good ol’ BBQ) than the Deep Ellum District.

I spent a nice part of my day in Deep Ellum, which is kind of like a mini-city within the city, appreciating the local artwork (aka massive murals on the sides of buildings and stand-alone art installations in the middle of the city), melting under the Texas summer sun, and breaking in the latest addition to my collection: the Asics Tiger Gel Saga.

Now, let me be honest: I’m a sneaker lover x 10 but, I’ve never been big on limited edition pickups. While there’s a place for certain hype releases, most of the time you can find me in classics. Since I was a kid, the classic (and often budget-friendly) shoes have been a staple in my daily wear. As an adult, not much has really changed. Give me a solid Cortez, a SK8-Hi, or a Gazelle and I’m good to go. One thing I’ve loved about the Gel Saga, is how its simplicity can make a big statement.

Pairing this colorway with a simple black bodysuit and black joggers added the perfect amount of contrast in order to draw more attention to the shoes. I also got a ton of questions about them at a local coffee shop that day so, win and win. In addition to being a classic shoe that any sneaker lover should stock in their collection, the Gel Saga is also super comfortable (I definitely walked about 2 miles around Deep Ellum that day). If you're a fan, I've linked my EXACT pair here. Ladies: my sneaks are actually a men's shoe but, you can still rock them. Just be sure to go down a size and a half from your normal. For example, I wear an 8 in Womens and this Gel Saga is a 6.5 in Mens.

I'm so excited to hit a few more spots around the city this summer! If you’re in Dallas, be sure to let us know.

Channing’s Deep Ellum Faves

Here’s where you’ll find Channing in one of her favorite parts of the Big D.

I live about 25 minutes away, so I always try to head to Deep Ellum during the day before parking gets crazy.

I’m a sucker for pizza and Serious Pizza has the best big slices in Dallas.

Jade and Clover is a knick knack dream—I’ve bought everything from succulents to funny cards there.

If you’re into bath bombs and candles that smell like heaven, Life of Riley is a really awesome local shop right off of Main.

For dinner with a view, I’ll go for the Half Smoked Chicken and Creamy Three Cheese Mac at Stirr Dallas. The view from their rooftop bar is amazing.

If you visit Deep Ellum, you’ll notice tons of large scale murals and artwork throughout the area. One of my favorites is the Deep Ellumphants mural by Adrian Torres.

A trip to a coffee shop is usually how I get through most of my work. My favorite in Deep Ellum is Murray Street Coffee off of Murray and Main. I always head to the upstairs loft for a latte and a few hours of focus.

As far as local, low-key spots go, I love to grab a drink and browse the vinyl at Off The Record.
