9 Going-Out Outfits You Can Rock With Sneakers
Honestly, it’s tough to know exactly where the night is going to take you when you get a “Plans tonight?” text. But no matter the evening’s agenda—if it sees you slipping into an underground rock show or perched on a stool at a pinkies-out cocktail lounge—pulling on a comfy pair of sneakers can be a stylish (and, by 2a.m., extremely smart) move. Whether dressing down red-hot pants, riffing off your favorite leather coat, or popping a peek of fishnet, here are nine ways to rock ’em all night long.
1. Dress Up
High-tops (Converse, Vans, even Reeboks), helped out by funky accessories like statement socks and a knotted bandana, tone down the seriousness of a maxi dress (the same goes for frilly short frocks as well). Top it all off with your favorite jean or leather jacket to stay cozy between venues.
2. Fancy Pants
Sparkly pants + crop top + heels is just too much lewk for some people: too formal, too fancy. But while pairing the outfit with a classic pair of Sk8-Hi Vans still says “Let’s party!” it’s more of a laid-back invitation hinting at the fact that you’ll definitely still be kickin’ it when the club closes and it’s time for the gang to source some late-night tacos.
3. OTT Yeah You Know Me
When your outfit is otherwise OTT (over-the-top)—hello gold jeans, sheer top, and fuzzy leopard coat—a crisp pair of Stan Smiths can be just the antidote. It’s a coolly casual down-for-date-night look that would work at the wine bar or the dive bar.
4. Romper Room
If you want to take a gold jumpsuit (or really, any jumper rocking bonkers color or pattern) out on the town, it calls for a neutral shoe, like all-black Vans Old-Skools, and some serious attitude. In this case, we say it’s totally ok to wear your sunglasses at night.
5. Skirting the Issue
A pair of sneakers like these classic Superstars give a flouncy skirt a dose of tomboy style (you’ll almost always find that pairing sneaks with skirts and dresses breathes new life into that section of your closet—trust). And playing with black and white from head to toe takes the getup in an extra-sophisticated direction.
6. Meet Your Match
Leather pants’ chillest sidekick is a simple pair of sneakers. Just ask Gigi, Kendall, Alessandra, who’ve all been snapped rocking the uptown/downtown look. And when sandwiching said pair of leather pants between color-blocked sneaks and a two-tone coat in the same shades, it’s a tongue-in-cheek take on matchy-matchy that we actually like.
7. Instant Classics
Even the most classic of cocktails can’t compare with the timelessness of Chuck Taylors. They go with literally everything—something you’d be hard pressed to say about that negroni (though we love a negroni). Attention-getting striped pants and a worn-in leather jacket are easy
8. Black Magic
Real talk: When outfit inspiration is running low, you can’t go wrong with all black, right down to your Vans. Fishnet socks and a buttery leather jacket add enough texture to keep it interesting.
9. Walk on the Wild Side
A T-shirt, tube socks, and black Vans give a dose of off-duty-rockstar cool to a black furry coat and pair of traffic-stopping red pants. It’s an I’m-not-trying ease that occurs when pairing sneakers with pretty much all out-there materials from vinyl to sequins to velour.
