Trend-Spotted: 9 Crazy-Cool Ways To Pair Plaid Pants & Sneakers
Up until recently, plaid pants pretty much fell into one of two categories: formal 9 a.m.-meeting attire or vintage find you loved in the shop but haven’t quite been able to figure out since. But lately, we’ve been seeing them paired with classic sneakers in a totally toned-down style reboot that’s on the rise in a big way. We’re even seeing celebs like Gigi Hadid, Kristen Stewart, and Sophie Turner rocking the look.
As these nine looks demonstrate, there are endless ways you can style up a pair of checkered pants with your own favorite sneaks, whether it’s a street-style take on tartan, a fresh spin on new-wave cool, or a head-to-toe beige-on-beige-on-beige getup. Check them out (get it?) for yourself below.

1. Out Of Office
While a wrap blouse and tweed pants are the definition of business chic, a pair of white Vans Sk8-His takes the look from conference-room uniform to casual anywhere attire.

2. The New New Wave
Put your own spin on the chic French Girl look with diamond checkered pants, a layered T-over-turtleneck moment, shocks of red, and your favorite classic sneaks. The Sidestripe on a pair of Vans Old-Skools mimics the graphic quality of the pants, but Nike Court Royales or two-tone Puma Suedes would work too. The result? A look that’s new-wave cool but totally now.

3. Check Me Out
Dark plaid’s formal appeal makes even a laid-back sweatshirt look office appropriate. Play up the casual work-life style mix by choosing pieces in the same color family, minus the kicks. Red sneakers (or any bold color, really) will keep the look no-nonsense but all chill.

4. Fun & Games
Give plaid the chance to lighten up with a knit sweater in a fun-loving hue like millenium pink or lavender (being called the year’s new “It” color). And while a capri-length cut is a playful take on plaid (the embroidered details all the moreso), it also leaves lots of room to spotlight classic sneakers, which help round out the carefree look.
5. Take It to the Streets
Tartan is Traditional with a capital T, and it can easily feel like grandma’s favorite tablecloth. Give it a 180 by going street style with skinny-cut pants and grounding them with creepers or black platforms for a full-on funky-fresh feel.

6. Soft Impact
A beige windbreaker with light-gray checkered pants is practically a foolproof look that’s relaxed and always on point—consider it the starter pack for introducing plaid into your wardrobe. Off-white Chucks provide a simple monochrome finish.

7. Classic Remake
The simplest way to ease up classic plaid trousers? Roll up the cuffs and direct the focus to your below-the-ankle game with a pair of platform kicks. A light gym sweater adds an athleisure-chic vibe. (Pro tip: A baseball shirt would look super cute too!)

8. Party Lines
Big checks in light colors are a statement on their own, so mix them with other bold pieces (fuzzy hoodie, striped pink socks, dark high-top Chuck Taylors) for a look that’s at the crossroads of casual and party-ready.

9. Winning Match
Pairing your Slip-On Vans with matching checkered pants might feel a bit extra, but doing it with shorts will keep the pattern nicely in check—plus it elongates your legs. Top it all off with red, which is basically black and white’s sassy-hot third roommate.
More of the good stuff—a celebration of the people who inspire us and the classic kicks in their closets.
